Skin cancers are the most common groups of cancers diagnosed worldwide, with more than 1.5 million new cases estimated in 2020. In 2020, an estimated 325 000 new cases of melanoma (a type of skin cancer) were diagnosed worldwide and 57 000 people died from the disease.
Skin is the most important part of the body as it protects the body from external germs and regulates the homeostatic situation of the body. Being the external cover of the human integumentary system, it is regularly fighting the environmental factors and external pathogens to keep us save but sometimes due to the strong external damages, skin fails to protect even itself and several kinds of skin diseases are arisen among which skin cancer is the most dangerous one.
It has been estimated that near about 1 billion people of the world including kids, women and old citizens are suffering from a kind of skin disease.
Several sources have claimed that about 1.5 million new melanoma cases (A Type of Skin Cancer) and 3-4 million non-melanoma cases (A Group of Skin Cancers) around the world are being reported every year.
As per an estimate by SingleCare.com, there were about 5 million skin cancer patients under treatment every year in the US only (non-treated or non-observed statistics are unknown) during the year2 of 2007-2011.
Treating skin cancer remains a top priority for scientists around the world, but in 2021, Vinu Krishnan and his team from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences of Harvard University in their recently published research have harnessed the power of hyaluronic acid conjugates and developed a DOCTOR to kill the skin cancer and protect the humanity from this rising burden of scary disease.
Note: This research does not mean every cosmetic product having Hyaluronic Acid or its conjugates are having anti-cancer properties. This research explains the experimental results of a developed conjugate named as the DOCTOR (DOxorubicin and Camptothecin Tailored at Optimal Ratios) is having anti-cancer properties.
